The High Court has fixed the date for hearing on the writ petition challenging the validity of the election schedule for the upcoming Dhaka City elections on Sunday (January 26).

On Thursday (January 26), High Court Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Md. A bench comprising Khairul Alam passed the order.
For lawyers, the court has said that an urgent writ on the election. Next Sunday it will be at the top (at the top) for the hearing. Advocate Yunus Ali Akand heard the writ on behalf. Deputy Attorney General was on behalf of the state.

Noor-Us Sadik. It should be noted that the writ petition was filed in the High Court on January 22 demanding that the city corporation elections be postponed because the voter list was not updated. Lawyer Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ.

In the City Corporation Election Rules of 20, there is provision for the signature of six voters in the case of an independent mayor. But in the case of party candidates, this provision is discriminatory and is considered to be in conflict with Articles 5, 9, 23, 23, 25 and 9 of the Constitution.


The petition further stated that the first date for the Dhaka City elections was fixed on January 5 and a schedule was announced. But he later amended the schedule and set February 8 as election day.

But according to the rules, there is no opportunity to amend the schedule with regards to the elections. The voting lists of the two city corporations have not been updated before the election, according to Rule 20 of the City Corporation Election Rule of 20.

On the other hand, according to Rule 3 (3), there are rules for updating the voter list from January 2 to January 5 of each year. But the draft voter list was published on January 23. While voter list updates are up to January 1, new voters will be excluded from the list. According to the rules, the term of the mayor of the city corporation will be 5 years from the first meeting.

The first meeting of the current mayors is on May 7, 20. As such, their tenure is expected to be up to May 5 this year. However, about 6 months ago the election was scheduled. The writ petition was filed for the above reasons.
